check the yellow pages, sometimes places that sell salon quality products sell to the public too. i hate packaged stuff, but when i have to, i get herbal essences, but i usually go red or blond...

I like garnier. It seems to give dimension to my color, not just one solid color.

I really like the Garnier home hair dye. It has avocado oil in it, which is less harsh than the really smelly brands.

If you want to just try out the color first before going permanent, I suggest vegetable dye. It's all natural, and it'll wash out after a month or so, so you can see how it'll look.

Find it at Sally's Beauty

Go to Sally's and pick up a good professional/home dye like Clairol Professional or Wella. You'll need a small bottle of 20 volume developer if you get permanent color, or a small bottle of activator if you get a semi permanent (I STRONGLY RECOMMEND SEMI FOR BLACK COLOR).

A note about a answer by someone else, vegetable dyes are typically Henna dyes, and they are NOT compatible with either professional dyes or box dyes (metallic dyes). They can cause bad reactions on your hair - bad/unpredictible color results or damage.
